DESCRIPTION: The Ring Master is the Boss, the fearless leader in-charge of The Corporate Circus. The Ring Master, behind a comical mask, is a no-nonsense character with a company mission to fulfill.
CHARACTERISTICS: Serious, stern, and tough, yet jovial due to his appearance and somewhat playful and wacky antics. He is constantly watchful of his staff to insure that everything is being done according to the company plan. As a boss everyone looks up to him, but he also understands his job is thankless and that he cannot please everyone. Therefore, he employs different management styles to get the job done. |
DESCRIPTION: The Cat is the Secretary who is a loyal employee (confidant) to the boss. She possesses a hidden unspoken power due to her entrusted responsibility to protect the boss from employees or other individuals who want to seek the boss’s presence. Thus, the secretary is often referred to as the “gatekeeper.” No one gets to the boss without going through her first. Other employees need to build a relationship with the secretary and gain her favor in order to get what they want. Because of this unique relationship with the boss, the Secretary is somewhat elevated above the rest of the staff and is treated with special care.
CHARACTERISTICS: A prima-dona princess who believes she holds the key to get to the boss. As a gatekeeper, she possesses power in The Corporate Circus arena and everybody needs to treat her with respect, kindness, and perks to gain her friendship and achieve an easier access to the boss. |
DESCRIPTION: The Gopher is the Mail Clerk, a simple-minded happy-go-lucky character in appearance, but with a deep understanding of his environment and people he encounters in the office. He goes to work, finishes his routine mindless job, goes home and doesn’t think about his work again until the next day.
CHARACTERISTICS: Easy going and doesn’t really worry about his job. With regard to job stress, his work is more physical rather than mentally taxing. He worries about contacting germs in the mailroom, but doesn’t let this worry ruin his day or his friendly demeanor and personality. He gets along easily with other employees because of his relaxed nature. He likes to talk about personal issues, politics, and current events while on his mail run. He is humorous and playful. |
DESCRIPTION: The Bull is the charismatic smooth operator salesman, the “Charmer”. He is an extrovert who likes to flaunt his flare and pizzazz to get the job done.
CHARACTERISTICS: He is charming, flashy, humorous, talkative, charismatic, aggressive, optimistic, engaging, friendly and overall easy going character who loves having a good time. He is generally happy and enjoys being out and not being cooped-up in an office or cubicle. Loves to wine and dine customers/clients on company dime. Not structured and absolutely hates details like keeping tab of the taxi receipts for the Accountant Owl. |
DESCRIPTION: The Lion is a self-assured Marketing King who thinks highly of himself, his image, and his creative work. The Lion is an artist who has high expectations and doesn’t settle for second best when it comes to exposing his talent and imagination.
CHARACTERISTICS: Regal, flamboyant and artsy. He is extravagant and a perfectionist. He judges everyone by its appearance. “First impression is the only impression” is his motto. |
DESCRIPTION: The Gorilla is the Research & Development guru who is an isolated genius in The Corporate Circus. He is the inventor, creator, and designer of new products and services for the company. He remains secretive and detached from his colleagues in order to protect his inventions. His department is a fortress surrounded with scanners and security alarm system as the company carefully safeguards his brainchild. His intelligence is so above that of his colleagues that he cannot relate or communicate with anyone at their level.
CHARACTERISTICS: The Gorilla is portrayed as an intellect, an “odd scientist” who drums-up new and unusual products in his isolated hideout. His elite persona makes him superior to his colleagues, at least in his own mind. |
DESCRIPTION: The Horse represents Operations, the “caretaker” of The Corporate Circus. In manufacturing or consumer product companies, the Horse handles the logistics of the company’s operation. From producing the products for sale, acquiring products/inventories for resale, acquiring the materials for manufacturing needs, scheduling production of goods, shipping/receiving of goods to customers/vendors, etc., the Horse is in-charge. Thus, the Horse’s responsibility is seen as labor intensive and physically oriented. The Operations department is an integral part of the company’s procedure in generating revenue, as they handle the flow of goods and services that eventually are delivered to the customer. Therefore, the Operations department is often referred to as “profit” center.
CHARACTERISTICS: The Horse is casual, informal and has a simple natured character that enjoys handling tools and machineries. The Horse, having a technical engineering mindset, is structured with a tunnel vision. He is organized and logical with his thoughts. There is nothing too fancy about this character. The Horse is a dedicated, structured, orderly and time-oriented character that likes to work with his hands. |
DESCRIPTION: The Bug is the Information Technology personnel whose computer knowledge is powerful and potentially a leading force that could easily dominate his colleagues. His expertise of computer systems and computer language gives him a competitive edge in today’s high-speed information age. Thus, he is considered the “looming” master waiting to take over The Corporate Circus. Deep inside this Bug, however, is a kid who loves his computer and enjoys playing virtual computer games. He spends many hours consumed in his work as if the computer blue screen possesses a magnetic force that hypnotizes and paralyzes him to stay stationary.
CHARACTERISTICS: The Bug is a kid-like futuristic introvert who has a hidden ego, which stems from the fact that his colleagues rely upon his knowledge of the computer system and language, and they are lost without his assistance. He realizes his colleagues lack the understanding of computer lingo and jargon and have to depend on him for answers, which is a real boost to his ego. Like a kid, he enjoys playing with his computer. He gets excited with electronic digital gadgets. The more bells and whistles it has the more this Bug lights up. The IT Bug is a loner, casual, geeky, soft spoken, methodical, aloof, and patient. |
DESCRIPTION: The Laughing Hyena represents the Customer Service representative who serves as a conduit between the customer and the company. She often gets the brunt of customers’ complaints and blame, even though she has nothing to do with the problem nor have any knowledge that such a product exists. As the company’s assigned point and front person, she represents the company’s face to the public. Her job is to handle angry customers with the utmost care and politeness, which the public often sees as pacifying and lacking sincerity. Thus, a customer service personnel is often unfairly labeled as the ‘joke’ of the corporate world.
CHARACTERISTICS: The Laughing Hyena is a cynical character on the verge of losing her nerves. She has periodic spurts of uncontrolled laughter caused by a breakdown in her nervous system resulting from internalizing her frustrations with aggravated customers. |
DESCRIPTION: The Kangaroo is the purchasing representative, The Corporate Circus Buyer, who loves to get a great deal. She is the ‘Shopping Queen’ of The Corporate Circus.
CHARACTERISTICS: As a “Shopping Queen” of The Corporate Circus, the Purchaser Kangaroo has an impulsive urge to buy things as she hops around different trade shows to find that special product for the company. As purchasing personnel, in-charge of logistics of purchasing supplies and inventory for the company, she gets annoyed when she receives purchase orders that are improperly signed by a manager. She insures each manager knows their limitations and buying power. |
DESCRIPTION: The Owl is a meticulously detailed, hard working, and dedicated Accountant. He is often seen as being a nerd who enjoys working with numbers, reporting them, and interpreting what they mean. Because of the amount of detailed work this character is involved with, normal working hours are usually not enough to finish the job, especially during month or year end closing and budget time. Thus, working late night hours crunching numbers and entering financial data in the computer are usually a norm for this character.
CHARACTERISTICS: A four-eyed introvert intellect and a workaholic, the Owl is an exotic “wild” bird character of The Corporate Circus. He has a hidden funny personality that’s dying to come out, but his bashful nature will never allow it to get exposed, unless he is alone and free to express his colorful side without being noticed by his colleagues. In addition, his routine labor-intensive and meticulously boring job responsibilities stifle the creative character in him. |
DESCRIPTION: The Octopus is the Human Resources manager, the “warden” of The Corporate Circus. She insures that all employees and departments follow the company policy and procedures manual, the bible of The Corporate Circus. Her reach throughout the company is widespread, as she oversees all the rules and regulations that must be followed by the company and its staff. She is the police force of the company. She works with all department heads when it comes to hiring new employees and she screens them all before being invited to join the company. She often makes employee candidates go through rigorous testing and background checks before they are hired. This Octopus handles all the training, motivation, incentives and continuing education of her colleagues. When it comes to having company parties, this Octopus is also in control.
CHARACTERISTICS: This Octopus is a no-nonsense militaristic warden with a firm control over her colleagues. She polices everybody’s behavior and makes sure everybody is playing within the boundaries of the company rules and regulations. She sees things in black and white, especially when it comes to solving sticky behavior problems within the company. |
DESCRIPTION: The Vulture represents the in-house lawyer, the Defender and Protector of corporate justice, who seems to have all the answers and wisdom as far as he is concerned. The Vulture has a crucial responsibility of cleaning up the political cesspool within the company and rescuing its employees from potential lawsuits. With rampant corporate scandals, gossips, and problems (both inside and outside the company), the Vulture is very careful in advising company's management and workers. He gets stressed and frustrated when his advice are not being followed, and later be asked to work miracles in saving the company.
CHARACTERISTICS: The Vulture has a know-it-all persona and pompous attitude. Since everyone seeks his advice, the Vulture is portrayed as a self-confident, self-consumed, and somewhat arrogant character that has all the answers in protecting and cleaning up the company mess. |
DESCRIPTION: The Rat is the “Gossiper,” The Corporate Circus troublemaker #2. This is the Snake’s sidekick. The gossiper usually does not have the intention to harm someone, as compared to the snake, however, because of its nature to spread rumors or stories it eventually becomes the snakes partner in crime.
CHARACTERISTICS: A rat is irritating and always looking to see what someone is up to. Loves to butt-in conversations even though it is not invited or welcomed. A rat is sneaky and always looking around for anything that could blossom into a story. A rat’s ears are always in tune with everything that is going on in the company, which is why eavesdropping is its fame. |
DESCRIPTION: The Corporate Circus element of danger is the Snake, the number one “troublemaker.” This is a genderless character with no affiliation to any specific department or employee. Every corporate arena, group, and organization has actual or potential troublemaker(s) who creates dissension, confusion, and distrust among the employees. Some troublemaker snakes are less harmful than others. The intensity of its’ venom depends on the outcome of its’ act. The snake’s presence is usually obvious and easily recognizable if only one pays close attention to their gut feel and follows their instincts, which most employees/people tend to ignore. A snake could be a friend or a foe. It depends on whether one is a victim or the culprit.
CHARACTERISTICS: Every fairy tale has a villain. The Snake is a mystical character and element that can wreak havoc in the corporate world. It is eerie, manipulative, secretive and most of all cunning and calculative to do harm and chaos. |
DESCRIPTION: Amy is overworked, frustrated and unhappy with her career. As a result, she suffers from fatigue and job stress. She feels unmotivated to go to work and her productivity is low. Her point of view and demeanor have been affected negatively by her attitude. Deep in side, however, Amy is basically a fun, creative, carefree, young-at-heart individual who is lost and caught in the responsibilities of her adult world. As a result, she has forgotten her free-spirited nature and has becomes a serious minded person who is yearning for self-worth and happiness.
CHARACTERISTIC: Amy is a young, ambitious, high-spirited, and educated professional corporate employee who has been in the corporate world for a few years. In some respect, Amy is a bit naïve and tunnel vision on how she views office life. Her decision-making abilities to compete in the corporate jungle needs guidance, direction, sound advice and wisdom. |
